The aim of this unit is to introduce you to a complex body of theory and recent developments in professional practice in relation to the challenges of managing an organisation's human capital and to situate this field of study in relation to the study of strategic management and strategic human resource management.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Analyse a complex body of theoretical knowledge on human capital management and as it relates to human resource management (HRM) including developments in these fields of study and areas of professional practice;
2. Reflect critically on theory and professional practice in relation to the characteristics of effective HRM practice in one or more practice areas and identify how they relate to employee wellbeing and effective individual performance life;
3. Critically review a complex body of knowledge including recent developments in relation to the factors driving organisational change, changes in the future of work and the workforce that have implications for workforce management; and
4. Integrate industry research in one or more areas of traditional and contemporary HRM practice in a selected organizational context that enhances employee wellbeing and job performance.

These are assigned texts, along with the readings. There is a wealth of peer reviewed journal research literature and numerous scholarly texts available on the topic of talent management.

Artificial intelligence
Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit.
GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:
- the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
- the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
- the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.
Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Special assessment requirements
Extensions
Students can apply for an extension to the submission due date for an assessment item due to extenuating, evidenced circumstances (specific details are found in the Assessment Procedures). An extension must be applied for before the due date. Documentary evidence (e.g. medical certificate) will be expected for an extension to be granted, however this will not guarantee that the application will be successful. The Unit Convener or relevant Program Director/Course Convener will decide whether to grant an extension and the length of the extension.

Late submissions
The following late submission period and penalty is applicable to any teaching period commencing after 1 April 2024.
To support the provision of timely feedback to students within the unit, late penalties will apply for summative assessments where late submission is permitted. Late submissions without an approved extension or reasonable adjustment will result in a penalty of a mark reduction of 10% of the maximum available marks for the assessment item per day (or part thereof) up to and including three calendar days. If a student submits more than three calendar days late without an approved extension or reasonable adjustment, the student will be allocated a mark of zero for that assessment, with no feedback provided.
Approval of extensions based on extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.
Special assessment requirements
You are required to complete all assessment tasks by the due date (unless you have an assignment extension approved) and achieve a mark of 50% or more overall to pass this Unit.

Assessment
You are required to complete and submit all assessment tasks and achieve a mark of 50% or more to pass this Unit.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.
UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).
UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Participation requirements
Students are expected to attend all five days of classes. Their attendance and contribution is part of the Unit's assessment model.
Turnitin will be used to check for plagiarism for all assignments. Your assessments must be written in your words and citations used when referencing material from published sources. One Turnitin preview will be available for students to check their assessment prior to submission. Students will only receive a Turnitin report for one draft submission of their work and again once their assessment have been formally submitted. Do not submit drafts to other Canvas sites, as this will be considered a form of self-plagiarism. Do not submit any material that has been formally submitted to other units. This is a form of academic misconduct.
Required IT skills
You need to be proficient in the use of WORD, to be able to research online including using the University's databases and electronic journals. You will be advised by the lecturer in class of the procedure for submission of assessment items and the due dates.

The summative assessment task in this Unit is a work integrated learning simulation using a project-based, problem-based, work-situated learning approach.
