In this unit you will be introduced to the diverse opportunities in the field of health. We will explore contemporary issues within a variety of health professions as well as professional body requirements, accreditation and/or codes of conduct will be considered. You will gain an understanding of the skills and abilities required to perform as a responsible, capable, health professional and learn how your chosen health discipline fits within the wider health community. You will start your career awareness and planning through approaches such as five-year plans and portfolios.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify the personal skills, capabilities and knowledge necessary to meet the standards expected by health graduates in their chosen field;
2. Map out their academic and professional trajectories over the next five years in a portfolio;
3. Demonstrate a capacity to work collaboratively as part of a team to achieve academic and real-world/professional goals; and
4. Recognise how cultural, social and professional boundaries, identities and expectations influence communication as relevant to the health professions.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Extensions for assessment tasks in this unit should be applied for by submitting an Extension Application Form, as described above, to the unit convenor via email. Documentation of evidence for the need for an extension should be submitted with the Form.

Whilst the standard 5% per calendar day late applies to submissions in this unit, specific penalties apply to particular aspects of certain assignments. For example, the late submission penalty would apply for late submission of Assignment 2: Becoming a professional, however, a student who does not attend their interview for this task would receive '0' against the criteria of the task that refer to the interview. These specific circumstances are described thoroughly in the details of each assessment task.

Students can submit all written assessments for a text matching Ouriginal report prior to final submission of the assessment task. Details are available on the unit UCLearn site.

 

Special assessment requirements

Note it is COMPULSORY to attempt all assessment items in this unit to pass ths unit, otherwise the student will not have achieved all learning outcomes required. It is possible to fail one assessment item and still pass the unit, so long as the total unit score is 50 or more. 

Academic integrity

Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Moderation

Assessment items will be moderated to ensure consistency and equity. Moderation of assessment items will include all failed submissions and a selection of other graded assessment items in each cohort in adherence with the Faculty of Health guidelines.

Learner engagement

Professional Orientation (Health) is a 3 credit point unit, which assumes around 150 hours of work over the semester. During Semester this indicates a commitment of around 10 hours per week on lectures, tutorials, preparation, assignments, and study.

Participation requirements

To pass this unit students are required to meet all of the criteria below:

  1. Successfully complete the Academic Integrity Module and upload your AIM Badge.
  2. Successfully complete the Endnote training quiz on Canvas
  3. Attempt all assessment items.
  4. Achieve an overall grade of 50% or higher.

Please remember that you will FAIL the unit unless you meet ALL of the requirements above.

Students are expected to actively engage in and contribute to tutorial discusions and activities to enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses.

Required IT skills

Basic use of internet browsers (eg. Chrome, Safari) is essential to navigate the UCLearn site.
