This unit will introduce students to the science of psychology and its applications. Specifically, employing psychological science to understand differences in how people think and behave in a range of real world situations faced by professionals during placements and post-university. This unit is applicable to students from a range of disciplines, such as health, psychology, business, law, science, technology, design and the arts. Through a series of case studies you will be introduced to a range of theories to understand people and behaviour.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Analyse and select major theories and research in psychology;
2. Interpret theories and concepts to explain why people behave as they do in a range of situations; and
3. Apply this knowledge in practical exercises and in written assessment.

The textbook has been customised for unit 11399 and contains only the readings relevant to this course. Please note, this textbook is also prescribed for Foundations of Psychology (10444) in Semester 2. Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

In order to pass this unit, the quizzes, short answer assessment, and the final exam must be submitted for evaluation, plus overall students need to achieve a mark of at least 50% for this unit. 

If you receive a mark in excess of 50% for this unit, but have not completed the compulsory assessment items, you will fail this unit.

 
EXTENSIONS  
 
Please read this information BEFORE contacting your Unit Convener for an extension.
 
1. Assignment extensions will only be granted in exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control.  No extensions are available for quizzes , except under extreme conditions (e.g. operations, serious extended illness during the period that the quiz is available).
2. Students are expected to work on the assessment items throughout the teaching period. Early communication of problems is strongly advised. Students should assess early in the teaching period whether they have a reasonable likelihood of being able to complete the unit and should consider withdrawing by the census date, if required. 
 
3. All requests will require documentary evidence (e.g., a medical certificate) and must be submitted to the unit convener. An extension will not be granted on the grounds of academic or employment workload, for undocumented issues or for technical problems.
 
4. To request an extension, email the convenor with "Extension request" in the subject line and include:
a. The Extension Request form which can be found on UCLearn (or at http://www.canberra.edu.au/current-students/forms)
b. Appropriate attached documentary evidence.
 
5. The unit convener will consider your request, determine the length of the extension to be granted and email you advising whether your request is approved or declined. If approved, the new due date will also appear on your UCLearn site where your assignment is submitted.
 
6. Penalties for late submission (without an approved extension) of assessed work will be applied.
Marks will be deducted at the rate of 10% of the value of the assessment item per day it is overdue (including weekends). For example, if an assignment is worth 30 marks, 3 marks will be deducted each day. Submissions received more than 3 days after the prescribed date and time will not be accepted for marking, a mark of zero (0) will be awarded for the item.
 
7. Assignments submitted after the due date, regardless of whether an extension was granted, will be returned at a later date than those submitted on time. 
 
8. Assignment submissions will not be accepted once the university examination period has commenced unless an extension has been granted in writing before the end of the teaching period. Such extensions will be granted only in exceptional circumstances.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Re-using your own work (from previous semesters or other units) constitutes plagiarism. 

 

Participation requirements

Students are expected to attend live sessions or listen to recordings for all lectures and tutorials. When attending and participating in lectures and tutorials, it is expected that students be mindful of others' rights to teach/learn, be respectful of staff and fellow students by having mobile phones switched off or to silent mode, and that personal/private conversations be conducted outside the classroom environment.

Required IT skills

Students are expected to have basic IT skills in order to navigate UCLearn. Regular access to UCLearn is a requirement for students enrolled in this unit to enable access to announcements, discussion forums, completion of online quizzes and for online submission of assignments. It is also expected that all students will have basic word processing skills. 

For Students enrolled in the Online Tutorials  

The online tutorials involve using the Blackboard Collaborate tool. Blackboard Collaborate provides a virtual classroom or meeting room where you can communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset.
