In this unit students will be introduced to the research methods used in the health sciences. The unit covers the research process, experimental and quasi-experimental methods, survey and correlational research, hypothesis testing and statistical inference. Students will also be introduced to a statistical program.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will:
1. Have an understanding of the major types of research methods used in the health sciences and the advantages and disadvantages of each;
2. Be aware of some of the issues affecting the reliability and validity of research designs; and
3. Be able to enter data in a statistical package and produce and interpret basic statistical analyses.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Research Case Analyses: Late penalties will be applied to the Research Case Analyses for those students without an approved extension as per university policy.
 
Laboratory Report: Late penalties will be applied to the Laboratory Reports for those students without an approved extension as per university policy.

Artificial intelligence

Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Special assessment requirements

The final mark is determined by adding all three assessment marks together – each individual assessment item does not need to be passed in order to pass the unit. 

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Participation requirements

Students are expected to access all lecture materials online. It is highly recommended for students to attend tutorials in-person. Homework materials and additional resources are aso provided on Canvas for students to complete in their own time.

Required IT skills

No special IT skills are required for this unit, although it is expected that all students will have basic computer and word-processing skills.  If you are unfamiliar with searching specialist databases for accessing journals please see the UC library site for details of training sessions. Skills in the statistical software jamovi will be taught during the unit.
