In this unit students will have the opportunity to develop their language teaching skills through class observations, peer observations, tutoring and/or working as assistant teacher, and microteaching. In workshops, students will report on and discuss their practical experience with peers, learn how to plan lessons, and put teaching methods into practice.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate teaching skills appropriate to a variety of language learning contexts;
2. Prepare and present effective lessons to language learners;
3. Recognise the practical dimensions of language through observations and practice; and
4. Reflect critically on their own teaching, the various roles teachers play and their professional responsibilities.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

All written assessment items will be submitted online via the unit Canvas site.

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant Canvas site. If the unit convenor and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, a standard late penalty of 10% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day until the assignment is made accessible.

Artificial Intelligence

Students are not allowed to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit.

Special assessment requirements

1. Students must complete every assessment item in order to pass the unit. This includes the Threshold Assessment items that are not allocated a mark (i.e. WWVP card, requirements for observations and tutoring).

2. An aggregate mark of 50% is normally required to pass the unit.

3. If there is any doubt with regard to the requirements of any particular assignment or assessment procedure, the onus for clarifying the issue rests with the student who should contact the lecturer about the matter.

4. Moderation is used in the TESOL courses to maintain agreed standards in the assessment of student work through a valid, consistent and transparent process, in line with the UC Assessment Policy. Sample assignments at different grade levels will be moderated for each assessment item in each unit. All assignments that receive a mark of 45 or more but less than 50 percent will also be moderated. In addition, if a student receives an overall mark close to a grade boundary, their assignments will be moderated before their final result is released.

 

Provision of valid documentation

Please note that the University takes student conduct very seriously. All documentation provided to University staff must be valid and the provision of fraudulent documentation carries with it potentially serious consequences, including suspension and/or exclusion from the University. Note that all allegations of student misconduct will be referred to the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) as a prescribed authority for investigation.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Learner engagement

The time devoted to the unit would normally consist of:

Participation requirements

This is a unit that is delivered to both online and on-campus students. While on-campus students will have regular timetabled activities, online students will be able to study in your own time. The course content is designed in weekly blocks that do not require online students to attend any timetabled activities. Please note there is a weekly online discussion session on Tuesday 5.30= 6.30 pm (this is not compulsary but you are encouaged to attend to enahnce your learning and keep you connected with the community). Assessment deadlines will apply.

Your engagement in both class and online activities, and reading material, will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of engagement may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items. Assessment items draw upon the learning completed through class and online tasks, and through Observations and Tutoring.Successful completion of the professional experience component is critical to success in the whole unit. Refer to assessment (5a) on the Canvas site for further details. Students must make themselves familiar with the processes and policies of professional experience.

Required IT skills

Students are expected to have word processing and IT skills to allow them to fully engage in the unit through Canvas and to complete their assessment. This includes basic word processing skills, engagement in Canvas activities, posting messages, uploading video and audio files, uploading assignments, and using the library catalogue and library databases. Students should ensure they have access to a computer and a safe workspace to complete the online activities.

Artificial intelligence services must not to be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task published with the assessment task and/or in the unit outline. That is, artificial intelligence services may only be used if:

  • its use is authorised by the unit convener as part of a specified
    assessment task, and
  • it is used in the way allowed in the assessment instructions and/or unit outline, and

its use is appropriately referenced, meaning that students must reference the use of AI in their assessment in the same way as they reference other source material.

In-unit costs

Required and recommended textbooks are available through the UC library for no charge. 

All costs related to Observations and Tutoring will be covered by students. Note that if you apply for a WWVP card (ACT) as a volunteer there is no cost.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves work integrated learning (WIL): Placement or Internship/Simulation/WIL Fieldwork/WIL Project. Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL policy and WIL procedure, and the Assessment policy, and Assessment procedure. For teaching degrees, students need to ensure they have their WWVP or for NSW, their Working with Children, WIL ready completions uploaded to InPlace

This unit includes observations and one-to-one/small-group tutoring. This will be facilitated by the unit convener. The UC Placement Office will provide administrative support.

Students are required to undergo a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) background check for this unit. Students are responsible for arranging their own checks through the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. Students are responsible for paying for the background check (if payment is required). Normally, as a volunteer you do need to pay for this. Observations cannot be undertaken without this. Note that WWWP only applies within the ACT. If you are in other jurisdictions you will need to follow the same procedure for that state or territory.

Placement administration will be handled by InPlace. Details will be provided in the first weeks of the semester.

Learning in this unit will be integrally linked to experiences in professional contexts.

Additional information

Assignments:

All assessment items must be typed (12 pt Times Roman) and spaced to at least 1.5 lines with sufficient margins for comments.

All assessment items must use appropriate citation and referencing conventions (APA 7th edition preferred).

Provision of information to the group

Notifications through the Canvas Announcements Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Canvas website (forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only).  Students should ensure they check their student email regularly.  The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.

Use of student email account

The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes".  Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account.
