This unit addresses the appropriate use of data required of those entering the teaching profession. Nationally, graduates from Initial Teacher Education courses are required to provide evidence from a variety of sources to demonstrate their impact on student learning. This unit addresses the multiple sources of educational data and related community data, the interpretation of this data and the different ways this data can be used. Pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of how to link the interpretation of relevant data to improving their teaching and therefore also improving their students' learning within the classroom.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Select appropriate sources of data to analyse, and interpret so as to improve learning for students;
2. Use appropriate techniques to communicate evidence based upon the data they have collected;
3. Analyse, interpret and effectively communicate the complexity of factors influencing learning to students, parents, and colleagues; and
4. Demonstrate how the use of data can assist in making changes to teaching plans, therefore impacting positively on student learning.

This book is available for purchase online in hard copy format, as well as eBook/Kindle.

Copies of the textbook are available for short-term loan from the UC Library, as well as in eBook format.

Required readings are available via Canvas and the UC library reading list. Additional resources will be made available on the unit Canvas site.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant canvas site. If the unit convener and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, or if no submission has been made by the due date and time, a standard late penalty of 10% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day, for three days, after which the submission will receive a score of ‘0' in keeping with UC's Assessment Policy.

Quizzes are closed after the due date and late submissions/extensions are not possible. Therefore, the 10% penalty per day for late submissions does not apply to Quizzes.

Special assessment requirements

An aggregate mark of 50/100 (50%) or higher is required to pass the unit.

Note that all allegations of student misconduct will be referred to the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) as a prescribed authority for investigation.

Learner engagement

Indicative workload:

  • Lectures & tutorial: 30 hours (3 hours a week)
  • Tutorial preparation and private study: 70 hours (approximately 7 hrs per module)
  • Assessment preparation: 50 hours

You should plan to work on your Assignment 3 progressively throughout the semester.

Inclusion and engagement

Students who have a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP), and have given InclusionUC permission to distribute it on their behalf, will have any relevant adjustments automatically applied to the time limits of quizzes and due dates of assignments.

If you have a RAP, and have not given InclusionUC permission to distribute it to Unit Convenors, and wish to make use of any relevant adjustments, please email it through to the Unit Convenor as soon as possible.

If you have applied for and received a RAP after the commencement of the semester, please notify and email a copy to your Unit Convener as soon as possible.

Participation requirements

As a unit of study offered in Flexible mode, attendance at scheduled sessions is not a mandatory requirement of this unit. Students who enrol in the ‘self-paced study' option (in lieu of tutorials) effectively have no tutorials to attend, and students who are enrolled in on-campus or remote tutorials may wish to re-allocate to ‘self-paced study' as the semester progresses.

There is, however, a strong correlation between participation and success in higher education. With this in mind, we encourage and expect students to actively participate in all module activities to enhance their learning opportunities.

Required IT skills

Students will need to use a computer or tablet with internet browser to access Canvas, required readings and the MySchool data. Students will need to use Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets in tutorials and assignments.

Artificial intelligence services must not to be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task published with the assessment task and/or in the unit outline. That is, an artificial intelligence services may only be used if:

  1. its use is authorised by the unit convener as part of a specified assessment task, and
  2. it is used in the way allowed in the assessment instructions and/or unit outline, and
  3. its use is appropriately referenced, meaning that students must reference the use of AI in their assessment in the same way as they reference other source material.

In-unit costs

The purchase of the set textbook, "Using and Analysing Data in Australian Schools" by Selena Fisk is strongly encouraged. The cost varies from ~$35 (eBook) to ~$65, depending on format and supplier.

Several copies of the set textbook, as well as an eBook, are available for loan from the UC Library.

Theoretical Foundations

The theoretical foundations of this unit are linked with professional practice research and a perspective of ongoing critical enquiry into existing practice with the aim of improving the achievement of all students.

Research Led Education

This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers delivering this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out.

Provision of information to the group

Notifications through the Canvas Announcements Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Canvas website (forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only).  Students should ensure they check their student email regularly.  The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.

Use of student email account

The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes".  Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account
