The unit covers the aspirations and practicalities of professional operation and considers contemporary demands for new levels of professionalism that address emergent global transformations and challenges.
Methodologically, students will examine the diverse employment opportunities available to them, including creative and entrepreneurial approaches to professional employment, and will start their career awareness and planning through approaches such as five year plans and eportfolios.
Learning outcomesAfter successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify the personal skills, capabilities and knowledge necessary to meet the work standards expected by the design and built environment professions in the workplace;
2. Map out their personal and professional trajectories over the next five years in an eportfolio;
3. Explain the interdependencies and nuances of the various design and built environment professions;
4. Identify the evolving responsibilities of the design, communications and built environment professionals to address contemporary global challenges; and
5. Identify the parameters and diverse opportunities of your discipline and to explore where and how you might play a role in it.

In this unit students will be introduced to the diverse opportunities in the world of design. We will consider aspects of contemporary demands of the profession including social responsibility, ethical and sustainability issues. Through engagement with industry, community and professional bodies' students will gain an understanding of global discipline knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform as responsible, capable design professionals. Students will start their career awareness and planning through approaches such as five year plans and eportfolios.

Students are required to upload their work on Canvas AND, where required, present it in during the tutorial in the virtual room.
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Attendance at scheduled classes and contribution over the semester is required. Presentation and discussion of your work in progress is essential for the development of your design skills in meeting the learning outcomes of the subject and for your design education.
Participation in class reviews provides important opportunities for feedback and demonstrates that the submitted work is your own.
Please advise the Unit Convener if you are unable to attend a particular class and provide supporting documentation.
Required IT skills
Basic computer literacy. Assessment will be submitted using Canvas. If you need help with this, please visit the LearnOnline Student Help area.
No expected significant in-unit costs beyond the usual computer based activities.
