Materials and Processes (11051.1)

This unit explores a range of materials and both traditional and digital manufacturing processes relevant to industrial designers for design for manufacture. You will investigate properties, use and select appropriate materials and processes for the design and manufacture of products using guidelines such as cost, suitability and environmental responsibility. Knowledge and skills will be acquired through design projects requiring problem solving and creative design solutions with the design process as the driving principle.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify and describe materials and processes relevant to industrial design;

2. Select relevant manufacturing materials and processes, both traditional and digital to communicate design solutions; and
3. Critically evaluate the design process in manufacturing products with regard to sustainable and environmental responsibilities.
