This unit requires students to successfully complete both components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). It is a threshold component for all undergraduate programs of Initial Teacher Education at the University of Canberra. Students will achieve either an ungraded pass or a fail grade for this unit. Students will have access to preparatory/support materials to assist with engagement with the test; if students fail one or both components (Literacy and Numeracy), they will be required to complete targeted workshops focused on literacy and numeracy support, but also on test-taking strategies (i.e. deductive reasoning in multiple choice tests) before reattempting the test.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate literacy and numeracy achievement equivalent to the top 30 per cent of the Australian adult population (see https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/about); and
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply test-taking strategies, including deductive reasoning, time management and following instructions.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE)

It is a requirement that all students in Initial Teacher Education courses complete the LANTITE.

Academic integrity

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Provision of valid documentation

Please note that the University takes student conduct very seriously. All documentation provided to University staff must be valid and the provision of fraudulent documentation carries with it potentially serious consequences, including suspension and/or exclusion from the University. Note that all allegations of student misconduct will be referred to the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) as a prescribed authority for investigation.

Learner engagement

This unit requires accessing the preparatory material on Canvas regularly in order to successfully complete the LANTITE tests. 

Participation requirements

Students who are not successful on one or more LANTITE attempts will be required to attend workshops on exam taking strategies and to book for a consultation with Study Skills (Library) and/or the Maths and Statistics Help centre (MASH) in Building 6B. Active engagement with the Modules on the unit Canvas site will be taken into consideration.

Required IT skills

Note that this unit is self-paced. You are required to engage with the material on Canvas independently. Self-directed engagement with the resources on Canvas is crucial for your success in LANTITE.

In-unit costs

Note that Engaging with LANTITE is a shell unit. The University of Canberra does not charge a tuition fee for enrolment in this unit. There is no credit point associated with Engaging with LANTITE (10453). ACER nevertheless charges a fee each time you register and attempt the test. More information regarding costs is available here.
