Research Component (Research Report) C R (Part A) (10392.1)

This unit is the third part of the Research Component to be included in the work submitted for external examination in accordance with the Examination of Higher Degrees by Research Thesis policy in the Research Portfolio R unit. This unit implements and executes the candidate's Research Plan approved by the Associate Dean (Research) and expert panel at the confirmation seminar. Working with a research supervisor and/or professional/industry adviser or supervisor, the component develops an overview and meta-analysis of the research question, problem or topic proposed in her/his Research Plan:
- presenting a summative argument showing how this particular body of research contributes to professional practice and/or a body of knowledge in the relevant field of business, government or law;
- addressing and engaging with practical issues related to the relevant field of business, government or law and/or professional knowledge and practice in the context of relevant and informing academic theory; and
- which bridges the gap between theory and practice by developing closer links between the University and stakeholders and other workplaces and organisations fields associated with business, government and law.
The output will be a research report not exceeding 25,000 words in length. There should be no overlap between the research report and the research outputs in the two other parts of the Research Component. However, the research report may incorporate ongoing analysis of research presented in the papers completed by the candidate in Research Component (Literature Review) A R and Research Component (Methodology and Data Collection) B R.

Learning outcomes

The outcome of a research unit for individual students is contingent upon what each student brings to the work and the amount of energy and effort they deploy. However, a student who engages in the research work and training in this unit with diligence can expect to be able to demonstrate in the research report the ability to:
1. Engage in critical reflection, synthesis and evaluation;
2. Develop, adapt and implement research methodologies to extend and redefine existing professional practice and the production and/or application of knowledge;
3. Disseminate and promote new insights to employers, peers, professional communities and the society; and
4. Generate original knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution to existing professional practice and the production and/or application of knowledge.

Prerequisites

10386 Research Fundamentals PG, 10387 Reading and Critiquing Literature PG, 10388 Research Design PG AND 10389 Current Research Issues in Business PG.
The candidate should be confirmed in their thesis according to the HDR Progress and Milestone Policy or its equivalent.
