This unit addresses the appropriate use of data required of those entering the teaching profession. Nationally, graduates from Initial Teacher Education courses are required to provide evidence from a variety of sources to demonstrate their impact on student learning. This unit addresses the multiple sources of educational data and related community data, the interpretation of this data and the different ways this data can be used. Pre-service teachers will develop an understanding of how to link the interpretation of relevant data to improving their teaching and therefore also improving their students' learning within the classroom.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Select appropriate sources of data to analyse, and interpret so as to improve learning for students;
2. Use appropriate techniques to communicate evidence based upon the data they have collected;
3. Analyse, interpret and effectively communicate the complexity of factors influencing learning to students, parents, and colleagues; and
4. Demonstrate how the use of data can assist in making changes to teaching plans, therefore impacting positively on student learning.

Students must have passed 48 credit points.

Students in Primary Initial Teacher Education courses must also have passed 12035 Foundations of Mathematical Understanding OR 9864 Core Mathematics.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant canvas site. If the unit convener and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, a standard late penalty of 5% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day until the assignment is made accessible.

Quizzes are closed after the due date and late submissions are not possible. Therefore, the 5% penalty per day for late submissions does not apply.

Special assessment requirements

Completion of all required unit components (including mandatory attendance and submission of all parts of the assignments) together with an overall grade of 50/100 (50%) or higher is required to pass the unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Provision of valid documentation

Please note that the University takes student conduct very seriously. All documentation provided to University staff must be valid and the provision of fraudulent documentation carries with it potentially serious consequences, including suspension and/or exclusion from the University. Note that all allegations of student misconduct will be referred to the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) as a prescribed authority for investigation.

Learner engagement

Indicative workload:

  • Lectures & tutorial: 30 hours (3 hours a week)
  • Tutorial preparation: 30 hours (3 hrs a week)
  • Private study (including weekly readings) and assessment preparation: 90 hours (9 hours a week)

You should work on your Assignment 3 progressively throughout the semester.

Inclusion and engagement

Students who have a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP), and have given InclusionUC permission to distribute it on their behalf, will have any relevant adjustments automatically applied to the time limits of quizzes and due dates of assignments.

If you have a RAP, and have not given InclusionUC permission to distribute it to Unit Convenors, and wish to make use of any relevant adjustments, please email it through to the Unit Convenor as soon as possible.

Participation requirements

Attendance at all scheduled sessions in this unit is compulsory and absences could result in a fail. All absences need to be supported by appropriate documentation (e.g., medical certificate).

Successful engagement with all learning activities in this accredited Initial Teacher Education course is necessary to demonstrate that you have met the Graduate career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL, 2011).

It is recognised that sometimes absence is unavoidable. If you are absent for more than two sessions, however, your engagement with the unit could be considered unsatisfactory.

Your participation in both class and online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.

Required IT skills

Students will need to use a computer with internet browser to access Canvas, required readings and the MySchool data. Students will need to use Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets in tutorials and assignments.

In-unit costs

The purchase of the set textbook, "Using and Analysing Data in Australian Schools" by Selena Fisk is strongly encouraged. The cost varies from ~$35 (eBook) to ~$65, depending on format and supplier.

Several copies of the set textbook are available for loan from the UC Library.

Theoretical Foundations

The theoretical foundations of this unit are linked with professional practice research and a perspective of ongoing critical enquiry into existing practice with the aim of improving the achievement of all students.

Research Led Education

This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers delivering this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out.

Provision of information to the group

Notifications through the Canvas Announcements Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Canvas website (forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only).  Students should ensure they check their student email regularly.  The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.

Use of student email account
