The unit focuses on the analytical study and practical implementation of contemporary music genres, key artists and their songs. It promotes an impartial approach to musical styles, focusing instead on the analysis of the musical elements that define them. It aims to develop an understanding of the contextual nature of contemporary song writing and composition and identify key historical, cultural and technological reference points that define contemporary music. Finally, the unit incorporates basic applications in music production and music technologies.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify historically significant songs, songwriters, songwriting practices and techniques;
2. Deconstruct popular songs to their essential musical elements to create new songs;
3. Apply standard practices to create simple chord charts;

4. Record, mix, master and upload songs; and
5. Apply communication skills in an academic/creative context.
