Required texts
There are no required texts for this unit. Written and video materials to support learning will be posted on Canvas.
Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Additional Information
The secret url to the student's Mahara e-portfolio must be provided via the Canvas dropbox.
Graded elements of the e-portfolio must be submitted as word documents via the Canvas dropbox.
Peer evaluated competencies will be assessed in class on Week 7 (Assessment Task 1) and Week 13 (Assessment Task 2)
Special assessment requirements
Students who are absent from class with appropriate documentation will be supported to develop specific skills via access to written and video material provided on Canvas as required readings. They can request additional tutelage from the unit convener depending on the reason for absence. They can also receive individual instruction on the skill from other students.
Long absences with appropriate documentation will be considered on merit and an appropriate extension period will be negotiated between unit convener and student.
Should conflict arise within student pairs, students should contact the unit convener to discuss. Reconciliation will be facilitated by the Unit Convener, and escalation to the Course Convener will occur if required.
Peer evaluated competencies will be assessed during scheduled class sessions during weeks 7 (Assessment Task 1) and 13 (Assessment Task 2). Students and their peer evaluators will meet with teaching staff at that time to have the presented evidence assessed, and to receive feedback should any necessary amendments be necessary.
Students must demonstrate competency in each peer reviewed component, and achieve a mark of 50% or more on the graded capstone task, to pass the assessment overall.
Supplementary assessment
Assessment Task 1
If the submission of Assessment Task 1 contains evidence that is assessed by the teaching team to be not of a competent standard, the student will be given further opportunities to resubmit evidence of performance at a suitable standard. When peer-reviewed work requires resubmission, both the peer reviewer and the student will receive feedback to help them understand why the evidence does not meet the competency criteria.
The first resubmission of peer evaluated competencies counts as a supplementary assessment. When resubmitted work meets competency requirements, the student submitting the work will receive 2.5 marks for that component of the portfolio, and the student will be deemed to have demonstrated the competency required. Where the resubmitted work does not meet competency requirements, the student will receive 0 marks for that item. In order to pass the unit, the student will need to resubmit the item again until competency is met, however they will receive a mark of 0 for that item. In all instances where peer evaluated work is judged by academic staff not to meet the required competency, two penalty marks will be applied and these will be deducted from the peer reviewer’s overall mark due to their inability to identify performance that does not meet competency criteria. This penalty will be applied to each errant peer reviewed competency.
Students achieving less than 50% on the graded "Assessing the needs of communities" component of the portfolio will receive feedback and will be required to revise their submission and resubmit within 1 week of the release of marks. Subsequent cycles of marking and revision will be provided, allowing opportunities for the student to improve their work to a pass standard. Resubmission of this component is not deemed a supplementary assessment and the original mark for the assignment will not be amended, however students who resubmit to a pass standard will have met the overall requirement to demonstrate pass/competency evidence for every component of the portfolio.
Assessment Task 2
If the submission of Assessment Task 2 contains evidence that is assessed by the teaching team to be not of a competent standard, the student will be given further opportunities to resubmit evidence of performance at a suitable standard. When peer-evaluated work requires resubmission, both the peer reviewer and the student will receive feedback to help them understand why the evidence does not meet the competency criteria.

Students achieving less than 50% on the graded "Integrated Intervention Plan" component of the portfolio will receive feedback and will be required to revise their submission and resubmit within 1 week of the release of marks.
Academic integrity
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Penalty to Peer Evaluators
Peer evaluators will be penalised 2 marks for each item they evaluate as competent that are subsequently assessed by the teaching staff as not meeting competency criteria.
Learner engagement
Due to the continuous nature of assessment in this unit, attendance at class is compulsory. All absences must be accompanied by appropriate documentation.
In the event of an approved long absence, the unit convener will work with the student to negotiate appropriate ways of catching up on content and developing evidence of competency.
The cumulative process of developing evidence of competencies is demanding. Students are encouraged to set time aside each week to develop and upload evidence of competency, as workload will accumulate quickly if students do not remain up to date.
Peer evaluation should also be considered a part of student workload. Students are encouraged to allocated time to this task to ensure that their partners are not disadvantaged by delays in reviewing evidence.
Participation requirements
This unit requires high levels of active participation in order to establish core competencies. Students will need to engage actively with learning tasks in every class.
It is essential that students actively participate in all seminars and exercises.
Such participation is required by students in order to meet the Australian Occupational Therapy Competency Standards (2018).
Therefore, except in the case of extenuating circumstances, 100% attendance at all sessions is expected.
It is also expected that if students are unable to meet these participation requirements they inform the Unit Convener as soon as practical, by telephone or email
Required IT skills
Students will need to develop skills in using Mahara as a repository for evidence of competency.
Preliminary information on using Mahara will be provided in Week 1 of class. Students requiring further advice, or experiencing difficulty with the platform, should seek assistance from library advisers.
Work placement, internships or practicums
