This unit builds on both theoretical knowledge and skills developed and gained in previous years of the course and in the Radiographic Image Interpretation unit. Interpretation of cross-sectional images from the imaging modalities of CT and MRI will be the focus. Students will develop a beginning knowledge and gain practical skills in image interpretation in these advanced modalities of normal appearances and more commonly seen injuries and pathologies. This unit also further develops the students' underpinning theory and practice of radiographer reporting systems and further develops skills of providing informed opinions.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Recognise and identify the normal appearance of commonly undertaken CT and MRI examinations and their normal variations;
2. Integrate an understanding of the common types of abnormality and diseases of each of the organ systems in CT and MRI undertaken in this unit with their imaging appearances;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of CT and MRI in patient management and its appropriate use;
4. Critically analyse the diagnostic limitations of the imaging modalities of CT and MRI;
5. Apply the basic principles involved in systematic interpretation of CT and MRI images; and
6. Critically appraise current theory and practice in cross-sectional imaging in CT and MRI.

Learner engagement

The students will participate in various learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, online learning activities and self-directed learning. The students' learning will be supplemented by the 10239 Canvas site.

Participation requirements

The lectures will be recorded and will be accessible through the 10239 Canvas site. A grade of 50% or greater overall is required to pass. In accordance with current professional accreditation requirements, to demonstrate you have met the learning outcomes of this unit it is expected that you attempt all elements of assessment to a reasonable standard.

Required IT skills

Students will need basic IT skills and high qauility access to the Canvas site.

This unit involves online lectures pre recorded using  the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room. If the need arrises the lectures may sometimes be pre-recorded and uploaded to the canvas site.
