This unit examines approaches to management, participation and policy relevant to conflict over, and sustainability of, natural and cultural resources. It links an understanding of natural and social systems with conflict resolution and engagement with stakeholders. This unit provides an opportunity for students to explore environmental conflict and stakeholder engagement with a view to resolving, minimising or managing the conflict. Students will be required to critically evaluate a range of environmental issues including stakeholders concerns.
PrerequisitesStudents need to have completed 48 credit points of previous study.
Assumed knowledgeVerbal and written English appropriate for third year tertiary study. It is assumed that students will have basic IT skills and be familiar with using (and have access to) word processing software. It is also assumed that all students will have internet skills (and access) to obtain online material.

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Where an assignment is a group project, the submitted work must include the student ID numbers of all group members on the first page.
All assessment items must be uploaded to Canvas, except for the quizzes.
If there is any doubt regarding the requirements of any particular assignments or assessment procedure, the onus for clarifying the issue rests with the student who should contact the unit Convener or tutor. Further, it is the responsibility of students to ensure that they are correctly enrolled in the unit and that teachers and Student Administration have their correct contact details.
Special assessment requirements
An aggregated mark of 50% is required to pass the unit. In addition, students must:
- complete and submit all assessment items for marking;
- pass (or have already passed) the Academic Integrity Module (AIM)
- achieve a mark of at least 40% (ie, 12 marks out of 30 marks) in the on-line test.
The amount of time you will need to spend on study in this unit will depend on several factors including your prior knowledge, learning skill level and learning style. Nevertheless, in planning your time commitments the 150 hours of study are assumed. The contact hours for each student in this unit consist of 22 hours of lectures (2 hrs x 11 weeks) and 22 hours of tutorials (2 hrs x 11 weeks). The remaining 106 hours of workload should be distributed across the various assessment tasks and self-directed study.
Engagement with the material in lectures, tutorials and online is required to complete the assessment tasks. The assessments will draw upon the activities completed during classes and online.
Required IT skills
Students will need basic computer skills in generic programs including web browsers, email and Microsoft Office software. The ability to take a digital photo of a diagram and quickly upload it to your computer may be useful in the online test. The written reports must be in word processor format, readable by MS Word 2007. All assessment items are to be uploaded to the unit Canvas website.
This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.

Work placement, internships or practicums
Lectures and workshops include environmental conflict and stakeholder engagement using real world scenarios. In some cases they are presented by external professionals.
The Engagement and Final Reports each involve a professional based scenario.
Unforeseen circumstances beyond the unit convener's control could result in changes to the mode of delivery of lectures, tutorials and practicals (where applicable) and assessments. Students will be advised if this occurs and appropriate alternatives will be arranged.
