Discipline Of Built Environment And Design Level 2 - Undergraduate Intermediate Unit Band 2 2021 (Commenced After 1 Jan 2021)

In this unit students will be looking at small to medium scale buildings and structures, their architecture, construction, structural, environmental characteristics, and site investigation. Integration of building services requirements into structural design and construction of small to medium scale buildings and structures are analysed. Students demonstrate application of materials in construction through precedence analysis, experimentation and documentation. Students will apply appropriate Australian standards and building codes and illustrate these through technical documentation.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate appropriate building system selection for small to medium scale buildings and structures.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of material properties and selection for building and architectural applications.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of historic precedence on contemporary construction.
4. Examine architectural and construction parameters in order to understand how structure, building services, and environmental performance integrate.
5. Apply relevant Australian standards and building codes.

Submission of assessment items

Special assessment requirements

Physical and Digital Submissions Both Required for Assessment: Both physical and digital versions of assignments are to be submitted on-time and at the required location for the assignment to be graded. If one or both of the submissions are not made for each assignment, it will not be graded. Assignments may be retained for accreditation purposes so please back up your work.


Plagiarism or Copying of Graphic Material: Please note that penalties apply for plagiarism of graphic material. While collaborations are encouraged on individual assignments, please note that all submissions for those assignments must be unique, or else it will be considered as plagiarism or copying and reported to the Faculty for further action. Penalties can be harsh. If in doubt, please discuss this with the Unit Convenor.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

Students are required to bring hard copies on paper of work in progress for discussion and review at tutorials - reviewing drawings on computer screens alone is not acceptable. Plese note that attendence at tutorials must be allowed to complete Assessments 1 and 2, and that these two assignments require all of the alloted time to be completed successfully. Any final submissions of work that has not previously been diccussed or reviewed with the tutors over the semester will be considered as a fail.

Required IT skills

Dedicated drafting programs such as Autocad, Rvit, Archicad are acceptable. Hand drawn approaches that conform to the requirements of technical drawing standards are also acceptable. Additional assistance for those who wish to hand-draw their assignments is available upon request.

PLEASE NOTE: Drawing in graphic programs (such as Photoshop or Illustrator), and design programs (such as Sketchup) is strictly not acceptable.
