Radiographic Image Interpretation PG (6cp) (10052.2)

This unit builds on both theoretical knowledge and skills developed and gained in previous years of the course and in anatomy and pathology units. Students will develop knowledge and gain practical skills in image interpretation and develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of different imaging modalities in diagnosis of pathology. This unit provides students with the underpinning theory and practice of radiographer reporting systems and develops skills of providing informed opinions.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Recognise and identify the imaging appearances of the normal axial and appendicular skeleton, chest and abdominal structures and their normal variations;
2. Synthesise the facts, concepts and terms related to the common types of abnormality and diseases of each of the organ systems and recognise their imaging appearances;
3. Critically evaluate and analyse images with regard to technical quality and anatomical detail and develop strategies for improvement when necessary;
4. Synthesise the management of patient diagnostic pathways with the appropriate use of medical imaging examinations;
5. Recognise and critically analyse the diagnostic limitations of various imaging modalities;
6. Analyse and apply principles involved in systematic interpretation of radiographic images;
7. Analyse and practice the principles of radiographer reporting systems and express informed opinion by utilising rational and rigorous argument; and
8. Demonstrate critical and independent thinking which reflects current theory and practice.

Skills development

Students are required to have a thorough understanding of equivelant units Regional Anatomy and Physiology & Systemic Anatomy and Physiology. The knowledge of the correct terminology in diagnostic medical imaging, basic physical principles relating to various imaging modalities and the application of the imaging modalities to different patient presentations, is an advantage.
