Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Critically evaluate and analyse the physical principles, functions and applications of the equipment used in planar medical imaging and synthesise the analysis with radiation detection and x-ray image production;
2. Analyse and justify the effects of various exposure combinations on image quality, and modify x-ray image parameters and exposure factors in various imaging situations to achieve optimal image quality;
3. Synthesise the analysis of the principles and methods used in quality management of medical imaging instrumentation with the clinical environment; and
4. Apply the rules of radiographic exposure control in the context of x-ray image production and the principles of radiation safety and evaluate these against the clinical examination.

All assessment items should be attempted. Students must obtain an aggregate result of greater or equal to 50% of total credit to pass this unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Learner engagement
The students are required to participate in various learning activities such as lectures, online learning activities, and self-directed learning. The students' learning will be complimented by the Canvas site. There will be three hours of lectures per week and four practical labs of each with one and half hours during the semester. Apart from the lectures and tutorials, students are required to engage in at least four hours of independent and self-directed learning per week.
Participation requirements
If you do not attend a practical lab, you will not be able to obtain any relevant data to complete the lab's assessment. Failure to attend a practical lab, without valid documentation, will result in zero marks awarded to this lab's assessment.
Required IT skills
Students have access to the online learning site (Canvas).
This unit may involve online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturers and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality a microphone and speaker headset are recommended. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.
You will be able to access and download your practical x-ray images via Xero, the UC picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Xero is a web browser based application and does not require you to install any software on your computer. You can use any PC, Mac or Android device that can connect to the internet anywhere in the world to access Xero. You will however only be able to access Xero if you are enrolled in the unit and will be provided with details for login.
Xero will be used in other units. You will be provided with an instruction manual via the Canvas Site.
