Radiographic Imaging 2 (10029.3)

This unit continues to develop students knowledge and skills in clinical planar radiographic techniques and examinations used in diagnostic radiography. On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to safely and competently perform routine planar radiographic examinations of the pelvis, hip and femur, shoulder girdle and humerus, spine, bony thorax and skull / facial bones; and critically evaluate (technical, anatomical and pathological) radiographic images relevant to these body regions. You will be able to discuss how to adapt radiographic examinations for a range of patient presentations including trauma presentation, pathology, age and to optimise diagnostic image quality given radiation safety considerations.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Discuss and apply planar radiographic techniques and protocols for examinations covered in this unit, as well as describe methods to modify a radiographic examination to enhance patient safety, and /or improve diagnostic image quality, and/or reduce radiation dose, and/or better demonstrate required anatomy or potential pathology;
2. Safely and competently perform simulated radiographic examinations relevant to content covered in this unit including pelvis, hip and femur, shoulder girdle and humerus, spine, and skull / facial bones with professional patient communication and care demonstrated throughout the examination;
3. Critically evaluate radiographic images using recognised radiographic criteria and demonstrate an ability to identify and correct any deficiencies visualised in the images for the examinations covered in this unit; and
4. Identify and apply normal anatomical structures and alignment, and common pathological and traumatic conditions, to radiographic examinations covered in this unit.
