FAQs

Can I submit my animal ethics application after the AEC deadline if there are extenuating circumstances?

Late submissions are generally not accepted unless there are exceptional circumstances. If you believe your situation qualifies, you must contact the Research Ethics and Integrity Office as soon as possible to discuss your options.

How long will it take for my ethics application to be approved?

You should submit your application at least 2 meetings prior to the anticipated start date as it can take considerable time for applications to be approved. Check the meeting dates and submission deadlines on the Human Ethics or Animal Ethics website and be sure to submit before the deadline.

Before submitting your application make sure all sections of the form are completed, and the responses properly address the questions with as little jargon as possible. This will reduce the number of questions sent back you from the reviewers. Also note that if your application hasn’t provided sufficient information for the Committee to assess it against the requirements of the National Statement or Animal Ethics Code, the Ethics Office may send it back to you for additional information before it will be accepted for Committee review.

My previous application has recently expired, and I forgot to submit a new one before the deadline. Would it be possible to request an extension on the expired application?

Under Part 4 Section 41 of the ACT Animal Welfare Act 1992 (the mandatory legislation that governs animal use for research and teaching in the ACT), authorisation of projects by the AEC can only be granted for a maximum period of 3 years. As such the Committee is unable to grant extensions for any additional length of time past the 3-year duration.

Who is responsible for looking after the breeding of my animals?

The Chief Investigator (CI) named on the approved animal ethics application is ultimately responsible for the care and breeding of animals under their project. Daily care may be delegated to the Animal Facilities Staff, but oversight remains with the CI.

Can I use my research animals for educational purposes or public interaction?

Use of research animals for education or public engagement must be approved by the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). A separate application or amendment may be required, and justification must align with ethical guidelines and welfare standards. Please contact the Research Ethics and Integrity Office for further advice.
