Introduction to the Centre from the Centre Director, Prof Selen Ercan

Welcome to the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance!

We are a world-leading research centre dedicated to advancing both scholarly and applied research in deliberative governance and democratic innovations. While our fields of expertise are diverse, we share a common commitment to exploring how deliberation—inclusive, reasoned, and reflective communication—empowers every people to shape political decisions that affect their lives.

Our research tackles some of the most pressing challenges democracies face today—including declining trust in government, the rise of far-right extremism, and the climate crisis. Grounded in normative political theory and supported by rigorous empirical analysis, we develop deliberative solutions to complex societal issues at local, national, and global levels.

Since relocating to the University of Canberra from the Australian National University in 2014, we have secured ten Australian Research Council grants and fellowships, including a prestigious Laureate Fellowship. Our staff have published 17 books with leading publishers, alongside 160 journal articles and 54 book chapters. You can find our publications here.

We offer world-class research training for PhD students, run the Deliberative Democracy Summer School and host a seminar series on deliberative democracy and related topics. We are also home of the flagship journal of the field, Journal of Deliberative Democracy.

We take pride in our vibrant research culture and the strong global networks we have cultivated over the years. Whether you are a scholar, student, policymaker, or practitioner, we invite you to explore our research, events, and publications.

We welcome applications from prospective PhD and Honours students, as well as visiting academics, year-round. We are also keen to collaborate with government, industry, and organizations dedicated to strengthening democracy and enhancing citizen engagement in Australia and beyond.

Professor Selen A. Ercan
Director
