This major is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Science. All units will be primarily run on site at ACT Pathology (The Canberra Hospital, Garran) with instruction from medical science and pathology professionals, supported by academic staff from the Faculty of Applied Science. The major is designed to provide education and training to students who wish to pursue a career in diagnostic pathology as a medical scientist. The major, therefore, has an applied clinical focus and will provide professional experience and skills required to enter diagnostic pathology laboratories upon graduation.

Only 10 students can enrol in 6520 Professional Practice 1; Medical Science in the final semester because of space, professional supervision and resource constraints at ACT Pathology. If more than 10 students wish to enrol, selection will occur by ranking students according to their degree grade point average (GPA) scores. Students not offered a place in 6520, should then select 6517 Integrated Studies of Disease.
