Strengthening Recovery Beyond the ICU
The “Inspire Beyond ICU” group focuses on improving recovery from Intensive Care.
We have world-leading expertise in Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT), which is strength training for breathing muscles, even for patients who are still ventilator-dependent. We are a proudly multidisciplinary research group, with an ICU survivor as an important part of our research team.
We are conducting a series of studies to improve the application of evidence to practice both in Australia and around the world. We have given workshops in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Spain, Japan, and Kuwait.
Supporting our research will help us accelerate recovery and improve quality of life for the thousands of people who survive ICU each year.
Our Approach
-
We prioritise research that improves recovery for ICU patients – survivors are an integral part of our team.
-
We care about people – we build them up, we support them, we respect them. This underpins everything we do.
-
We build research capacity at local levels – and through this, we also shape intensive care clinical practice.
-
We welcome new ideas and perspectives – especially across disciplines. We are always learning together.
-
We overcome barriers together – we are solution-focused and tenacious, we share resources, and we can achieve much with very little.
-
We share leadership opportunities and, as a team, grow research leaders of the future.
-
We value personal and professional time. We aim to share the workload and set realistic timelines to minimise impact on individuals’ lifestyles.
-
We value the long-term impact our research findings may have on patient recovery, and we will work to disseminate study results and embed them into practice as quickly as possible.
