Master of Communication

Advance your career with a postgraduate degree in communication from the home of creative education.

UC's Master of Communication has been expertly designed to build your confidence and prepare you to lead across today’s evolving media and communication landscape. Tailor your expertise by specialising in either Strategic Communication, Journalism or Marketing.

With a fully online option, you can study from anywhere in Australia and fit uni around work, family and other commitments. A government subsidy (CSP) is available for eligible domestic students which helps reduce study costs.

You’ll develop advanced skills in communication, leadership, research and audience engagement while exploring how ideas move across organisations, communities and public life. You’ll learn contemporary communication practices and examine the issues influencing industry in Australia and beyond.

Through practical, real-world lectures, assessments and projects, you’ll connect theory with practice in meaningful ways. By graduation, you’ll be ready to return to the workplace with deeper knowledge, broader perspective and the capability to step into more senior roles.

Our Master of Communication includes a set of core units that build the foundation of your postgraduate study. These units focus on advanced communication practice, research, audience insight and the role of communication in organisational and public contexts.

You’ll explore how communication operates across complex environments, develop your ability to analyse data and behaviour and strengthen your approach to research, planning and evaluation. With a focus on contemporary practice, these core units support your progression into more specialised study and professional application.

Communication and media are central to Australia’s growing creative economy. In 2023 to 2024, the cultural and creative sector contributed $67.4 billion to the economy, with advertising and promotion among its largest contributors.

For communication professionals, that points to strong long-term relevance across media, marketing, public relations and organisational communication.

The Master of Communication helps you build advanced expertise, strengthen your professional credibility and prepare for more senior roles across government, business and the community sector.

You can apply for the Master of Communication if you meet one of the following:

  • An undergraduate degree (AQF Level 7) or equivalent
  • Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations (EDC201)

UC also considers a range of factors when assessing your application, including your academic record, English proficiency and relevant work experience.

Pathways and credit

There are multiple ways to enter the course or reduce your study time:

  • If you have completed a UC Graduate Diploma in Communication, you may receive credit for up to 8 units.
  • If you have completed a UC Graduate Certificate in Communication, Communication (Engagement) or Digital Marketing, you may receive up to 12 credit points (4 units).
  • If you hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field, you may be eligible for up to 12 credit points of unspecified credit, reducing your study duration to 1.5 years full-time.

Additional credit may be available depending on your previous study.

Professional and alternative entry

  • Professional Pathway Entry: If you have significant work experience or industry-recognised qualifications, you may be eligible to enter without a prior degree.

  • Veteran Tertiary Support Program: Defence members at O-1 level or above, or E06 and above, are eligible for direct entry.

A course with Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) means the Australian Government has subsidised a portion of your degree, reducing the total balance you are required to pay (known as the student contribution amount).

The CSP amount is determined by the course you are undertaking and the industry you'll be working in after graduation.

You don’t necessarily need a background in comms, media or similar to apply for our Master of Communication.

This course is designed for both career progressors and career changers. You can apply with an undergraduate degree in any discipline, or through alternative entry pathways such as professional experience. If you have studied in a related field or completed a graduate certificate or diploma, you may be eligible for credit, which can reduce your study duration.

Throughout the course, you’ll build knowledge in strategic communication, audience engagement, research, digital communication and contemporary professional practice. That makes our postgrad comms degree a strong option whether you are looking to move into the field, broaden your expertise or work towards more senior communication roles.

UC also considers factors such as your academic record, English proficiency and relevant work experience when assessing your application. 


A communication degree can open up career opportunities across government, business, media and the not-for-profit sector. Communication professionals are needed to manage messaging, build audience engagement and support organisational strategy.
