Activities and teaching
This Module explores modes of bilateral cooperation through the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement and multilateral cooperation within international forums. Special attention is given to three timely themes for addressing global crises:
Integration of trade and sustainable development
Intersections of migration and gender
Enhancing the multilateral governance
These Module topics are explored through a range of activities (special teaching units in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at UC; simulations); outreach events (academic policy dialogue for students and the broader public), research outputs (publications) and teaching resources.
The project involves interdisciplinary engagement across UC’s Faculties (Business Government and Law; Faculty of Arts and Design), cooperation with EU-based scholars, and academic-policy dialogue with practitioners (diplomats, government officials) and policymakers in Europe and Australia.
Australia and Europe in Global Governance unit
This interdisciplinary unit is offered as an elective unit in undergraduate (Bachelor of Laws) and postgraduate programs (Master of International Business and Master of International Development) at the UC.
The unit provides a critical overview and reflection of the European Union’s engagement as a global actor, particularly in influencing the development of global governance and addressing global crises (climate change, migration, health). As part of this unit, students will undertake a range of practical activities, such as Trade Negotiation (EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement) and Crises at the EU Border simulations.
Trade negotiation simulation is a "hands-on" workshop that develops negotiating skills and provides an understanding of some of the contentious issues in the negotiation of the free trade agreement between the EU and Australia. Participants are divided into two groups to represent the European Union and Australia. Groups are assisted by panel experts who are practitioners in the field. The exercise is divided into 5 phases;
- Preparation
- Intra-country negotiation
- EU-Australia trade negotiation
- Conclusion and ratification of the Free Trade Agreement
- Debriefing and reflection.
