Inclusive and Accessible Communication: Basic Principles and Challenges
About the seminar
In this lecture, I will introduce some of the key principles of inclusive and accessible communication practice, focusing on notable challenges and important considerations for equitable information sharing in diverse societies. I will pay particular attention to issues around gender-inclusive language, representations of disability, and the importance of accessible and culturally informed approaches to information sharing during crisis events. As a case study, I will also discuss some of the findings of my research surrounding migrant and refugees’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic in Australia. I will conclude with some recommendations (arising from my research) for improving crisis communication to better meet the diverse information sharing and support needs of multicultural communities.
