20 September 2022: At this year’s second round of graduation ceremonies, the University of Canberra celebrated its first Master of Optometry graduates alongside all other cohorts – with 1,230 graduates in total joining the ranks of the University’s alumni.
For the Master of Optometry graduands, it’s been a journey that began with a Bachelor of Vision Science at the University.
“We are very proud of this first graduating cohort from the Master of Optometry course – this marks the culmination of a five-year journey for each of them,” said Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Professor Michelle Lincoln.
“Every single member of this cohort is already employed and many of them will be contributing to the rural and regional workforce – both in the ACT and surrounds, as well as beyond.”
The students gained vital hands-on experience at the University of Canberra optometry clinic, which opened in 2020 in collaboration with Canberra Hospital to provide affordable care for the community and a practical learning space.
The graduation ceremonies celebrated graduates from the University’s five faculties: Health; Education; Business, Government and Law; Arts and Design; and Science and Technology.
Some of the larger graduating cohorts included those from Nursing, Vision Science, Medical Radiation Science, Master of Business Administration, Building and Construction Management, and more. The University also welcomed 20 new PhD holders to the academic community.
“I'd like to extend my warmest congratulations to our newest graduates, who will continue to be an integral part of our UC community,” said Professor Paddy Nixon, the University of Canberra’s Vice-Chancellor and President.
“Your graduation reflects your commitment, resilience and hard work in your studies, but also officially signals the next chapter in your professional life. It is a truly exciting time.
“We look forward to seeing the huge impacts each of you will make in your industries and communities.”
