04 November 2014: University of Canberra students have helped ACT volleyball teams win gold for the first time in 10 years at the Australian Junior Volleyball championships. Both the ACT's under 23s men's and women's teams won their respective matches at the championships held at the AIS in July.

The men's team included Matt Tyrrell, Justin Pronin and Simon Hone, while the women's team featured Georgia Miedermenier, Tessa Barbour, Maddy Clayden and Sarah Quilter.
The men's team beat Queensland in the grand final in four sets, while the women's team defeated Western Australia in three sets.
First year public relations student, Tessa Barbour, said that the competition was good and it was incredible to win.
"Leading up there was so much pressure knowing how long it had been but when we won, we just could not believe ourselves," she said.
She described the close relationship with her teammates as one of the reasons why she enjoys playing the sport.
"I find that the whole ACT volleyball community is a tight knit group because there's not many of us and so we all bond together for the love of the sport and playing it and travelling together."
Sports coaching and exercise science/nutrition student, Simon Hone, said it felt good to win the gold medal.
"Having quite a small volleyball base compared to a lot of the other states, it is really good to know that the ACT can compete at a national level, and win," he said.
