VC statement on the retirement of Professor Alex Zelinsky AO

Statement attributable to Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra, Professor The Honourable Bill Shorten on the announcement of the retirement of Professor Alex Zelinsky AO retirement as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Newcastle.

"Professor Zelinsky has had a distinguished career and has made an extraordinary contribution to Australian higher education, science and innovation.

“As Vice-Chancellor, Alex has led the University of Newcastle with vision, integrity and purpose. Under his leadership, the University has expanded opportunities for students, strengthened its research capabilities, engaged with industry and community, and reinforced the important role universities play in regional communities.

“What has impressed me most about Alex’s leadership is how the University of Newcastle has established itself as a genuine leader in advancing equity in higher education at scale, making university study attainable for all.

“Before entering university leadership, Alex had already established himself as one of Australia's most respected scientists and innovators. As Chief Defence Scientist, a CSIRO executive and a pioneer in robotics and technology commercialisation, he has been steadfast in his commitment to translating research into real-world impact.

“Alex has been a respected colleague and trusted friend since I commenced my tenure at UC. I have greatly valued his counsel, support and commitment to advancing higher education in Australia.

“On behalf of the University of Canberra, I thank Alex for his outstanding contributions to the Australian university sector. He leaves a rich legacy, and I wish him the best for his retirement."
