A visionary in online learning, emerging technologies and education, Professor Barney Dalgarno, will be joining the University of Canberra to take on the role of Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education in early 2020.
Professor Dalgarno, an alumnus of the University, will be returning to Canberra having established an impressive 21-year academic career at Charles Sturt University’s Wagga Wagga campus. Professor Dalgarno holds degrees in Science, Education and a PhD in Education.
“The University of Canberra is an institution dear to my heart as I graduated with my master’s degree in 1997 and spent four pivotal years working for the institution in the late 90’s,” said Professor Dalgarno.
“The University’s strong focus on professional education, integrated learning and research align really well with my own vision for contemporary universities.”
Professor Dalgarno is looking forward to his return to Canberra and is eager to take on this leadership position that should see the Faculty poised to achieve pioneering advances in teacher education in the ACT and regional NSW through its partnership with ACT Education Directorate and the Affiliated Schools Program.
“There is great potential through this partnership to establish world leading clinical teacher-education approaches,” said Professor Dalgarno. “The program will see academics and teachers working together to build a new, innovative and highly skilled cohort of educators that will advance teacher education into the future.”
Apart from scaling up the Affiliated Schools Program, Professor Dalgarno is excited about the strengths of the Faculty and its leading international research. He sees his arrival as an opportunity to foster and progress existing successful research and to explore opportunities for new research partnerships.
Professor Dalgarno has held a number of senior academic positions at Charles Sturt University and has published widely on online and technology enabled learning and the future of education.
Professor Dalgarno will commence as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education in February 2020.
