Australia Awards students complete UC degrees

11 January 2016: University of Canberra Australia Awards scholarship students recently celebrated the completion of their studies at a farewell ceremony on campus.

At the celebration held last month, 24 students were presented with their completion certificates by dean of students, Michele Fleming.

The students undertook a range of degrees including Master of International Development, Master of Laws, Bachelor of Building and Construction Management and Master of Strategic Communication.

The Australia Awards are international scholarships and fellowships funded by the Australian Government, which offer high-achieving students from around the world the opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia to contribute to the long term development needs of their home countries.

International student advisor Aaron Harwood said the students were thrilled to celebrate their achievements and the chance to don graduation robes.

"The farewell ceremony is important for many of our completing awardees, as many of them do not have the opportunity to return for the graduation ceremony due to their scholarship conditions and financial difficulties of return travel," he said.

"Students enjoyed the opportunity to be recognised for their achievements and celebrate their accomplishments before returning home to move forward with careers in their various fields."

The students are from Bhutan, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Palestine, Dominica, Laos, Lesotho, Maldives, Pakistan and Kiribati.

Mr Harwood said the program is important because it educates future leaders in developing countries and establishes strong ties between Australia and these nations.

There are more than 70 Australia Awards students from 24 different countries around the world currently studying at the University.
