UC breaks through THE world rankings

Claudia Doman

1 October 2015: For the first time in its history, the University of Canberra has been ranked in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings, confirming its rise among the best universities worldwide.

The University of Canberra was ranked in the 501-600 band in the 2015-2016 Times Higher Education ranking out of 800 institutions worldwide.

This achievement follows the University's recent climb of more than 100 places in the 2015-16 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings announced last month.

The Times Higher Education's World University Rankings measure universities on five areas of higher education excellence: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

The recent recruitment of some of the world's best researchers, winning more competitive grants and an improved research performance across the board have largely contributed to the University's growing reputation as an up-and-coming research institution.

Vice-Chancellor Stephen Parker said it is very rewarding to see that the University's growing reputation in research and education as well as its increasing international outlook are having an impact in these rankings.

"This is another great recognition of the University of Canberra's outstanding achievements in its very brief history," Professor Parker said.

"Although the University has never been specially funded for research, it is already being considered among other top universities with longer track records.

"It's exciting to think what the University of Canberra will accomplish in the next 10 or 20 years."

Times Higher Education World University Rankings' editor Phil Baty said the rankings, now in their 12th year, "apply rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks across all of a global research university's key missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

"The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders and governments," Mr Baty said. "For University of Canberra to make 501-600 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated."
