This unit is an introduction to the legal and professional responsibilities of landscape practice, with specific reference to ethical behaviour and practices. Topics include the framework of contract, commercial and environmental law; consultancy and client relationships; professional negligence and risk; project administration and implementation; and the role of professional institutes.
1.Appropriately address commonly occurring professional and ethical issues that form part of the responsibilities of landscape architects to the community and to future generations;
2. Explain the basics of legal issues in professional practice;
3. Demonstrate a capacity for active participation as a practitioner in landscape architecture;
4. Be appropriately aware of the principles of negligence, within a quality assurance framework, and of risk management to allow for continuous personal improvement;
5. Contribute to the debate, practice and theory related to the contribution of landscape architecture to a sustainable future; and
6. Articulate and critique the professional expectations of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects for entering the profession as a graduate.

The textbook for this unit includes references to a wide range of recommended additional references. It is recommended that students also research additional material themselves.
