This unit explores and navigates modern art history. It discusses how the major artistic and cultural movements of the Modern Era have presence and influence within contemporary art and culture.
Students will learn to identify key artists, concepts and styles within the Modern Era. They will investigate the integration of cultural, historical and theoretical knowledge with their practical work. And they will be able to outline the major artistic and cultural movements of the Modern Era.
A sound understanding of this unit will allow the student to culturally and historically situate both their own practice and the work of other practitioners in the Visual Arts sector.
1. Identify key artists, concepts and styles within the Modern Era;
2. Integrate cultural, historical and theoretical knowledge with practical work;
3. Outline the major artistic and cultural movements of the Modern Era;
4. Comment on how the major artistic and cultural movements of the Modern Era have presence and influence within contemporary art and culture; and
5. Employ communication skills in an academic and/or creative context.

Participation requirements
Students are expected to attend and actively participate in all lectures, and workshops. If a student misses lectures or workshops, regardless of reason, it may negatively impact upon their final assessment, due to them having missed important educational information and material. Announcements that are made at lectures, and via class email, are deemed to be made to the whole group.
