The Negotiated Concept for Fashion 1 provides students the ability to formulate a self-directed innovative and enterprising project. In response to contemporary industry issues students are required to develop a strategy directed towards a major piece of fashion product design and development work. Informed by research, this work will be industrially relevant. Through this unit, students are able to investigate and justify the means through which the work can be realised. Building on the knowledge and skills students have acquired, they will apply research into relevant cultural and historical debates and the current industry to produce a critical analysis of their personal practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Plan, organise and complete an individual fashion project;
2. Evaluate and realise a range of presentation techniques suitable for promoting their project;
3. Apply an advanced level of creativity and originality to their own practice; and
4. Critically analyse the demands and requirements associated with professional practice.

Artificial intelligence

Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

1.      the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment

2.      the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow

3.      the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Supplementary assessment

In the event of a contested failure of the unit, a supplementary assessment will be made available to the student through a request to the unit convenor, following UC policy.

Learner engagement

The amount of time you will need to spend on study in this unit will depend on a number of factors including your prior knowledge, learning skill level and learning style. Nevertheless, in planning your time commitments you should note that for a 3cp unit the total notional workload over the semester or term is assumed to be 150 hours. These hours include time spent in classes. The total workload for units of different credit point value should vary proportionally. For example, for a 6cp unit the total notional workload over a semester or term is assumed to be 300 hours. 

Inclusion and engagement

Students who need assistance in undertaking the unit because of disability or other circumstances should inform their Unit Convener as soon as possible so the necessary arrangements can be made.

Participation requirements

It is expected students attend all lectures and tutorials as per timetable in order to benefit from formative feedback on design development. Students must contact the lecturer to arrange a catchup meeting if they are unable to attend any sessions. However, if a student is unable to attend multiple sessions due to personal reasons, documentation (eg. medical certificate) must be provided to be considered for extension.
