Students may fulfil the requirements of this unit by conducting an approved research project under the supervision of an academic member of the University of Canberra or an approved professional institution like CSIRO. On completion of the unit, students will be able to conduct a research project and report its outcomes in both written and verbal form consistent with the standards of their chosen discipline.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will have:
1. Developed advanced skills for undertaking scientific research;

2. Developed an advanced understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of designing and executing a scientific research project;
3. Obtained experience in liaising with agencies and individuals associated with the research project;
4. Presented an advanced level scientific report of their research both written and orally; and
5. Negotiated a research proposal with their supervisor which includes explicit detail on when assessment items are due, assessment criteria and marking schema.

Prerequisites

An above average academic record, and permission of the unit convener based on agreement by a staff member to supervise the research and a full statement of objective(s) and an outline of the study to be undertaken.

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

All assessment items, except the oral presentation and supervisor report, must be uploaded to Canvas.  Details for the oral presentation will be provided on Canvas in a timely manner.  Supervisor reports may be uploaded to the unit Canvas site or emailed to the unit convenor Bernd.Gruber@canberra.edu.au.

Responsibility for understanding

If there is any doubt with regard to the requirements of any particular assignments or assessment procedure, the onus for clarifying the issue rests with the student who should contact the unit Convener or supervisor. Further, it is the responsibility of students to ensure that they are correctly enrolled in the unit and that the supervisor and Student Administration have their correct contact details.

 

Special assessment requirements

Students are required to achieve at least 50 % for the Research Report assessment item and an aggregate mark of 50% to pass the unit.

This is a unit that students may want to reference in employment, scholarship and post-graduate applications. Consequently students may want to aim for the highest mark that they can achieve.

The Project Proposal, together with evidence that the student has negotiated agreement from an academic staff member in their discipline area to supervise the project, are absolutely essential. Failure to submit the proposal on time, or (after revision if necessary) by the due date to a standard acceptable to the staff member prepared to certify willingness to be supervisor and to undertake an appropriate risk assessment will preclude a pass in the unit.

            The unit convener reserves the right to question students orally on any of their submitted work.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment will usually only be offered to students who have failed a single unit in their final semester with a final mark between 45-49% and the unit is required for course completion. 

Academic integrity

Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

In this unit, these hours include time spent in consultation with your supervisor and undertaking laboratory or field research. Be aware that research is not predictable and you may end up spending much more time collecting and analysing your data than initially intended.

Participation requirements

Your participation in this unit will be determined in consultation with your UC supervisor and documented in the Project Report. This unit consists of an individual research project and the onus is on the student to ensure that the research is undertaken. Should you experience problems with undertaking the research required to pass this unit, please contact the unit convener immediately.

Required IT skills

This unit may require specialist IT skills as discussed with your UC supervisor and the Unit Convener.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves working in a professional research environment and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in section 6. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client /patient confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports or essays. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all activities specified in the Project Proposal for the successful completion of this unit. If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied, it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future teaching period. 

Some projects will require additional student responsibilities depending on their projects.  Students must confirm with their supervisors if any of the following are required:

  • Police Record Check.  Please refer to the Police Check Policy in the Professional Practice for Medical Science Handbook for further information. Please check with your supervisor if this is required and organise for a check to be done. 
  • Immunisation Policy: The ACT Department of Health and Community Care recommends that all students are immunised according to the National Health and Medical Research Council Schedule.  Please refer to the Immunisation Policy in the Professional Practice for Medical Science Handbook for further information.
  • Client/patient confidentiality:   Projects involving research or data collected from human subjects requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics.  Please refer to the appropriate UC policies on human ethics.  Students should note that if approval is required from the UC Human Ethics committee, this needs to be organised well in advance as the committee meets only a few times per year.
  • Human ethics approval:  Projects involving research or data collected from humans requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics.  Please refer to the appropriate UC policies on human ethics.  Students should note that if approval is required from the UC Human Ethics committee, this needs to be organised in advance as the committee meets monthly.
  • Animal ethics approval:  Projects involving research or data collected from vertebrates requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics.  Please refer to the appropriate UC policies on animal ethics.  Students should note that if approval is required from the UC Animal Ethics committee, this needs to be organised well in advance as the committee meets only a few times per year.

Additional information

This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers acting as supervisors in this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out.

Provision of information to the group

Notifications through the Canvas Announcements Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Canvas website (Canvas forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only).  Students should ensure they check their student email regularly.  The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.

Use of student email account

The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes".  Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account.

In all cases of absence, sickness or personal problems it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the unit Convener is informed. The minimum participation requirement must be met in order to pass the unit (regardless of supporting documentation).
