This unit aims to provide students with the quantitative research skills and knowledge required for postgraduate study and will address the research process, the principles underlying data analysis, research methods and study design and statistical approaches.


Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate appropriate quantitative methodologies and their application to correctly address the specific research question;


2. Address and improve validity and reliability in quantitative research;

3. Demonstrate practical application of data analysis, using an appropriate methodological approach and supporting software and reflect on strengths and weaknesses of different data analysis strategies; and

4. Apply the methodological principles from conception to communication to a specific research project.

Submission of assessment items

Special assessment requirements

To obtain an overall pass grade in this unit, the student must:

-  Attempt all assessment items; and

-  Obtain an overall aggregate mark of 50%.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Moderation: All the quizzes are indeed moderated, especially for the students scoring low compared to the rest of the group.

Moderation of assessment items:

All assessment items, including exams, are internally reviewed and moderated before they are published in unit outlines, listed on Canvas, or printed out for the final exam period. This review of assessment items is performed by another academic within the same field who has a good understanding of the subject matter and is be done as part of the unit curriculum review. Moderation of assessment items will be conducted in accordance with the Faculty of Health moderation guidelines.

 

Moderation of marking: 

There is a random selection of assessment items that are moderated in a unit, including all failed assignments (excluding exams). The moderation of passing assessment items is based on a sample chosen randomly, on a percentage basis at different grade levels or the full range of submitted items to develop a common view about performance.

Participation requirements

Students are expected to actively engage in this unit through Discussion pages, completing all online tasks and participating in ALL the Canvas discussion forums and activities. Assessment activities have been designed to stimulate students to put hands on the practical application and how to do/perform methods they have been exposed to.

Required IT skills

Information will be available to students via Canvas, an online educational hosting site.

It is expected that students will have basic word processing skills and an ability to use databases to search for journal articles.

Students will need access to statistical analysis software. SPSS or jamovi are encouraged and supported, but other options are available.

Students must be able to use the statistical software they choose to use. Examples and advice will generally be offered in SPSS or jamovi. This is not a software course, but candidates will gain statistical software proficiency throughout.

Students are encouraged to use reference management software.

In-unit costs

Students who choose to purchase statistical software other than that which is provided by the University of Canberra will need to cover that cost themselves. We note that there also also free and/or open source statistical software packages available. Other learning resources will be available via the library, or freely online.
