Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Identify the implications, risks, and opportunities of global markets;
2. Acquire and demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills within money, banking, and financial market disciplines;
3. Describe the structure of financial markets, the factors that shape them, and how they are regulated;
4. Explain the nature and functions of money and the role of financial markets in the economy;
5. Assess the responses of the economy to both monetary and fiscal policy;
6. Explain the basic purposes of the monetary and financial systems;
7. Identify the markets for stocks, bonds, derivatives, and currencies;
8. Explain how information about the future can reduce the uncertainty associated with future monetary value; and
9. Assess how a financial crisis happens and how policy makers should respond.

This course is composed of a range of different free, online materials. However, it makes primary use of the following materials:
- Frederic Mishkin's The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets, 9th edition
- Robert E Wright, Money and Banking version 2.0 which is available free online. A copy of this textbook can be dowloaded from the Unit Moodle website.
- Articles from various sources available on the internet

Learner engagement
This is a self-paced unit to be undertaken fully online with no contact with an academic face-to-face, except for the final examination which is to be undertaken face-to-face. As such it requires strict adherence to learning with pre-prepared learning materials including reading materials and multimedia recordings at a time and place of your choosing and requires you to consistently work through the materials and assessment independently.

This is an entirely an online unit and students are expected to go online and complete the required readings and the assessment tasks.
