In this unit students will learn the fundamentals of operations management as they apply to both production and service-based operations. This includes the day to day activities in organisations where supply chains and workflow interact with a business's operations. Students will learn how to manage these operations to improve business outcomes.
1. Explain the role of operations and its relationship with the other functional areas of a business organisation;
2. Analyse operation processes from a variety of perspectives such as productivity, workflow, and quality;
3. Apply the "transformation model" as a construct for understanding the relationship between the inputs, processes, and outputs of an organisation;
4. Explain techniques and methodologies for managing an organisations productive resources;
5. Apply basic design principles to determine appropriate facility location and layout;
6. Explain quality management and apply quality management principles to continuous improvement in operations management;
7. Discuss the goal of supply chain management and its application in a variety of organisational settings; and
8. Identify the critical factors involved in inventory control systems.
