Physiotherapy, surgery, and therapeutic exercise are introduced and explored for these traumatic and degenerative conditions. There will be a special emphasis on the prevention, and management of physical problems secondary to these injuries and diseases. Further, the evidence for effective management of chronic musculoskeletal disease is introduced.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding of musculoskeletal trauma including fracture classification;
2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of chronic inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system;
3. Understand and identify patient problems and principles for physiotherapy management based on current evidence;
4. Develop communication skills for talking and writing to professional and lay people;
5. Choose and apply appropriate simple physiotherapy management for a routine orthopaedic problem; and
6. Demonstrate safety in manual skills.

Special assessment requirements
To pass the unit, students must
- attempt each assessment item
- pass the Laser and Therapeutic Ultrasound test
- pass the Gait Aid competency test (allowed multiple attempts)
- achieve at least 50% overall.
Moderation
The Discipline of Physiotherapy adheres to the University of Canberra’s policies on moderation. The standard of assessment in this unit will be equivalent wherever and however the unit is delivered. Assessment will be moderated to ensure that judgments of students’ performance are consistent, transparent, reliable and valid. Learner engagement
In planning your time commitments, be aware that attendance at one or more Orthopaedic Review Meetings is Compulsory in order to complete the Orthopaedic Case Study .
These meetings are at Calvary John James Hospital (Peter Yorke Buidling, level 3) at 7.00am on Fridays.
Please remember to pay for parking so that you don't get a parking fine.
Participation requirements
All Physiotherapy practical classes require compulsory attendance unless otherwise specified. Please let your tutor know if you will be absent. It is the students' responsibility to make up any missed material, and to recognise that lecture and practical material is all examinable.
While the lectures may be recorded on "ECHO", this does not mean attendance is not required. Echo is to support your learning. Attending to work commitments outside of set clinical placements required for the course, is not an acceptable reason to miss scheduled classes. Any classes you miss are your responsibility to make up.
Required IT skills
Students will need access to computers with internet access. Learning materials are provided on Canvas and assignments are uploaed in Canvas. Students will also require skills in word programs and referencing programs for completion of assignments. Endnote referencing software is available through the UC Library.
Work placement, internships or practicums
Attendance at the Orthopaedic review meeting in weeks 1 to 4 are considered work integrated learning. You should update "Inplace" appropriately.
