Professional experience placement

Successful completion of the professional experience placement is critical to success in the whole unit. Students must make themselves familiar with the processes and policies of professional experience.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.

UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).

UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.

Learner engagement

            Lectures = 6 hours

            Workshops = 12 hours

            Readings and online viewing = 20 hours

            Assessment tasks = 30 hours           

            Professional experience placement = 20 days 

Participation requirements

Attendance at all scheduled sessions in this unit is compulsory. Successful engagement with all learning activities in this accredited Initial Teacher Education course is necessary to demonstrate that you have met the Graduate career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

More than two undocumented absences from this unit could result in a fail. In the case of medical reasons or other extenuating circumstances (e.g. a death in the family) medical certificates or equivalent documentation will need to be provided.

For those unable to attend the lecture/workshop days because of illness or some other emergency, please note that there will be recordings available on Moodle at the close of the lecture/workshop day.

Required IT skills

ICT skills are required to access the Moodle site and online activities.  Submission of assignments and necessary professional experience documentation will be online. 

Work placement, internships or practicums

Professional experience is a required activity to receive a grade in this unit. A successful 20 day (BEd), professional placement is requisite for a Pass in this unit.

Please follow these instructions to ensure your unit convenor remains informed of your progress in your negotiated placement.

1.Fill in the professional experience placement planner in collaboration with your school mentor. (This can be found on the Professional Experience site and on the Moodle site for this unit). Indicate on the planner when your interim and final reports will be completed.

                2.Upload your planner, as a draft, to this Moodle site using the dropbox

3.If your proposed schedule for the completion of your interim and final reports changes, please upload a new planner with the new dates

Please note: This unit involves work placements hence it requires strict adherence to professional practice, principles and ethics. School, student, and/or research participant confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items like reports or essays etc.

Additional information

In all cases of absence, sickness or personal problems it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the unit convenor is informed. The minimum participation requirement must be met in order to pass the unit (regardless of supporting documentation).

                Provision of information to the group

Notifications through the Moodle Announcements Forum or the Moodle Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Moodle website (Moodle forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only). Students should ensure they check their student email regularly. The Moodle discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.

Use of student email account

The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes". Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account.
