This unit explores international cultural diversity as an essential element of our understanding in analysing the key political, economic and social issues in the world today. It examines the cultural underpinnings of perceptions, values and norms across different cultures, from their 20th century backgrounds to the present. It facilitates a better understanding of the key arguments related to universalist versus cultural relativist approaches to ethics, rights and justice. There is a particular focus on contemporary global issues and misunderstandings revolving around conceptions and representations of cultures, race, ethnicity, religion and gender. The unit also explores shifting notions of identity and citizenship.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand and critically analyse the cultural influence on key contemporary international political, economic and social issues;
2. Understand the key arguments related to universalist and cultural relativist approaches to ethics, rights and justice;
3. Understand and critically engage with shifting notions and representations of cultural identity; and
4. Demonstrate a broad awareness and understanding of contemporary global issues from a cultural perspective.

This unit covers material from a number of different disciplines. As such, there is no one textbook that adequately covers its themes. Weekly readings are available on the unit Canvas / Moodle site.

Extension Policy

1. If assessment items are submitted after the due date and time without an approved extension, then they will be subject to the following penalties: 5% reduced marks from the total available, per calendar day or part thereof, late; submissions over 7 days late will not be accepted.

2. You must contact the unit convenor to get approval for an extension before the due date (unless the situation makes this demand unreasonable).

3. You may be granted up to two (2) calendar days' extension with no documentation required. For this, the convenor will require an assurance from you that (a) you have made a reasonable attempt to complete the assessment item, and (b) something unexpected has delayed you.

4. If you require more than two (2) calendar days' extension, then you will need to supply appropriate documentation, such as a medical certificate, or counsellor's certificate. This documentation needs to be provided when you make your request for an extension.

Participation requirements

 Students should attend all classes and actively engage with unit content. As a guideline, students with less than 80% attendance are placing their studies at risk, as students with poor attendance will find it difficult to keep up with the workload.

Required IT skills

The ability to use internet browsers and basic word-processing ability. The ability to use the Library's databases and journals for research purposes.
