Public Sector Management (7083.5)

This unit introduces students to the study of management in the public sector. It approaches public sector management from a broad perspective, discussing both international and Australian practice and relating developments to changing ideas about the role of government in society.This unit emphasises the distinctiveness of public sector management by examining the traditions, building blocks and general issues of public administration. Second, it explores the patterns of change in public administration and management including recent reforms and developments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the principles and values underpinning traditional and contemporary models of public administration using examples largely based on the Australian experience;
2. Comprehend the agendas, values and processes involved in recent reform of the public sector;
3. Apply theoretical concepts and issues to real world situations; and
4. Demonstrate competencies in the written and oral presentation of academic work.
