Required texts
Students should ensure they have read and understood the UC Master of Clinical Psychology Placements Handbook, and Program Handbook, prior to undertaking clinical placements.
Students are expected to be familiar with, and act in accordance with, the APS Code of Ethics and the Psychology Board of Australia/AHPRA standards, and other legislative requirements at all times. Texts used in course work units can be used for this unit to assist with theoretical understanding. The placement organisation may also require certain readings to be undertaken or training to be completed prior to or as part of the placement. Students are encouraged to discuss with their supervisor suggested readings evaluating the assessment and treatment of relevance to the placement client population.

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
All assessment items are to be submitted together with additional placement documents in a folder to the Unit Convenor within two weeks of placement completion. The placement folder must be signed by the student and their supervisor to confirm that the placement, and all documentation, has been completed. An assignment cover sheet is to be included with this piece of work. Students cannot submit this on line. All case, progress notes, student log books, and supervisory contracts and placement documentation must be signed by the student and supervisor. Failure to do so will result in a fail mark.
A signed cover sheet must be included with every assessment item submitted. A copy of the completed contents of the placement folder should be scanned and submitted to the external placement coordinator for storage.
Special assessment requirements
An ungraded pass is achieved by demonstrating competency overall for the clinical placement through a passing grade. This is achieved through students completing all placement hours, being deemed to meet competency standards at the requisite Stage across all domains at the final placement review and given a pass grade by their supervisor, and submission of all placement documentation in line with requirements to the External Placement Coordinator. If a student is identified as having difficulties on placement, their supervisor will meet with the student to discuss these concerns and develop a plan outlining activities and deadlines designed to address these. Depending on when these concerns are raised, a placement may need to be extended in order to support the student's development in reaching appropriate competence. However, if progress is not made or does not reach the required Stage within an appropriate timeframe, a fail grade will be applied. In these circumstances the supervisor and student will be required to identify specific learning needs and activities to address the concerns raised. Students will be encouraged to take a break from clinical placements for at least one teaching period in which to address the concerns raised. Approval to enrol in a clinical placement will be required, pending appropriate demonstration of activities which addressed the issues raised. All concerns raised by supervisors and plans will be discussed and reviewed with the supervisor, Unit Convenor, Clinical Program Director and clinical team to ensure appropriate moderation of student performance evaluations. See information about fail grades in 6i.
Supplementary assessment
Not offered
Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.
Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.
UC students have to complete the Academic Integrity Module annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).
UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.
Information is provided in the Academic Integrity Policy, Academic Integrity Procedure, and University of Canberra (Student Conduct) Rules 2023. For further advice, visit Study Skills.
Learner engagement
An extension may be granted beyond the end of semester as placements often go beyond the semester period.
Students need to negotiate this with their external placement supervisor as each placement has unique requirements
Participation requirements
Students are expected to attend their placement on all agreed upon days for the duration of placement. Should absence be required for any reason, your workplace supervisor must be advised by telephone as soon as possible.
Students are required to engage with their placement site as they would a professional workplace.
Required IT skills
None
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit involves engaging in clinical practice and therefore additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in section 6. Workplace learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client confidentiality must always be maintained (see your placement organisation's policy on this) including for assessment items such as reports, work samples and assignments. Students are expected to adhere to the APS Code of Conduct and Ethical Guidelines, and to consult with their individual supervisor and/or the external placement coordinator if they are concerned about any practice issues in the course of their placements. If a student is found to have breached the APS Code of Ethics during placement, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) may be advised, which could affect provisional registration and completion of practicum placements. The professional nature of this unit also requires complete participation at all learning activities scheduled by your supervisor and external placement workplace for the successful completion of this unit. If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied, it is recommended that you meet with your unit convener and placement supervisor to schedule this unit and placement for a future semester and/or change placement.
Students should consult their prospective placement organisation and supervisor as to specific field requirements. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they meet the field placement requirements before commencing the placement. Failure to do so may delay the start of the placement.
Students may be required to undergo a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) background check and a Working with Children check to undertake a placement. Your placement supervisor and Placement Office should be able to advise on this. Students can arrange their own checks through the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. The student must pay for this.
Students are encouraged to consult their supervisor and/or members of the Clinical staff if they are concerned about any practice issues in the course of their placements.
Additional information
Provision of information to the group:
Please note that important announcements will be made via Canvas.
Submission of log record: Students will initially submit their placement folio to their individual supervisor, and once this has been checked by the External Placement Coordinator for final approval and filing. If the placement folio is incomplete, the student will need to re-submit in order to pass.
6i Fail Result
In the event a student fails the placement, the opportunity will be provided for the student to repeat the unit. Such is contingent upon maintenance of provisional registration. Consultation with the External Placement Coordinator and the Convenor of the Master of Clinical Psychology program is required prior to re-enrolment. A second fail grade will result in the a Discipline recommendation to the university that the student fail the MCP program.
