This microcredential introduces students to the foundational knowledge and practical skills to support people experiencing mental health challenges in community organisations. Students will gain an understanding of mental health conditions, the social determinants that influence mental wellbeing and the common challenges faced by individuals. Practical strategies for recognising signs of mental distress and ways to encourage an inclusive, supportive and stigma free approach to support and refer will be covered.
Enrolment is restricted to Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 staff, volunteers and nominated participants, and not open to the general student population.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe and reflect on the key concepts of mental health, including common conditions and the influence of social and cultural factors, to build awareness within a community context; and
2. Demonstrate respectful and inclusive communication and culturally sensitive support strategies to engage with individuals experiencing mental health challenges, including appropriate referral practices.
