Contemporary Counselling Applications (12145.1)

This unit provides you with an opportunity to learn the competencies required to be an effective online counsellor. The unit will cover the skills, ethical and practical issues involved with telehealth modalities, and how to identify and respond to professional and practical considerations when working online locally and internationally. Advances in working with clients who have experienced trauma will be explored and you will expand your theoretical understanding of trauma and the impact on the individual, the community and society, further developing your counselling skills to inform your counselling practice in all modalities and diverse populations.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Renew counselling skills, Rogerian concepts and theory, and revisit the art and practice of self-reflection;
2. Analyse the need for trauma informed practice;
3. Develop online counselling skills appropriate to various platforms including chat rooms, telehealth and video conferencing tools; and
4. Analyse and demonstrate counselling skills in both face to face and online modalities.
