Groupwork Practice in Social Work PG (12021.1)

This unit has an in-person on-campus intensive component. In this unit students will build upon their core cooperative and collaborative skills required in contemporary society. Students will explore the theoretical frameworks and practical skills for groupwork, with particular attention to therapeutic group work, self-help groups and teamwork. The unit focuses on assessing the need for a group, understanding group formation, development, leadership, processes and closure. Skills in the use of digital technologies for groupwork are developed.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify and critically analyse theoretical approaches to group work practice in social work;
2. Demonstrate skills in group planning, formation, facilitation, development, and evaluation; and
3. Explicate and adopt online/digital technologies for helping facilitate group work.
