The Analytical Methods unit aims to develop students' analytical thinking skills and their confidence and competence in solving and analysing mathematical and statistical problems through developing their capacities to acquire appropriate knowledge and concepts; reason logically, interpret, organise and analyse information and data; apply knowledge and skills to creatively solve problems; and justify and communicate results using appropriate tools. The Analytical Methods unit develops an understanding of the issues involved in collecting, organising, critically analysing and reporting of information. It also addresses interpretation of statistical information provided in reports, journals and news. Analytical Methods has students working on a variety of puzzles and problems, using their experiences and knowledge to find creative solutions. Problem solving promotes processes and skills such as communication, critical reflection, creativity, analysis, synthesis and generalisation.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Utilise and apply research methods;
2. Assess and apply a range of problem solving strategies; and
3. Analyse, interpret and convey information within an academic context.

Special assessment requirements

To satisfactorily complete this unit, students must:

• attempt ALL assessment task, and

• achieve 50% overall, and

Upon meeting these requirements students will awarded one of the following grade:

High Distinction HD 85-100

Distinction DI 75-84

Credit CR 65-74

Pass P 50-64

In the event that the student receives a FAIL grade (below 50), one of the following may be used in the final grading:

NX – Fail result based on failure to reach a pass grade in the unit having completed all assessment.

NC - Fail result based on failure to complete one or more of the assessment requirements.

NN - Fail result based on non-participation.

Supplementary assessment

Students from UCC are also eligible for a supplementary assessment if their final mark is between 45 and 49% provided this is the ONLY unit they have failed. If they have failed other units then they are not eligible. Students should speak with the Program Coordinator.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

Students are asked to attend as many classes as they possibly can. There is a direct causal link between class attendance and passing the unit. If you are struggling with regular attendance please contact the Program Coordinator. Students are also asked to use the Canvas site to catch up on any classes they may have missed by watching the allotted videos or lectures and completing the embedded activities.

Required IT skills

Laptop availability would be recommended. Otherwise, ensure you use a Desktop computer at home. If you have no devices currently please use the computers made available on Level B, in the Library.
