Health assessment is fundamental to knowledge and skill development for competent nursing practice. Students in this unit will develop skills to support comprehensive health assessment, situational awareness and communicating for safety in dynamic clinical settings. Information literacy, clinical reasoning and clinical judgement are core elements of this unit. In addition, students will demonstrate the recognition and use of data and information at a foundational level to inform safe practice and collaborative communication for safe person-centred health outcomes. This unit will also support students to explore the scope of nursing knowledge, linking health assessment approaches, clinical reasoning and critical thinking and, reflection for learning.
1. Identify and analyse health data to inform nursing care that promotes wellness and safety at a foundational level;
2. Use clinical reasoning and critical thinking to align comprehensive health assessment and the use of data to recognise health deterioration and identify therapeutic nursing outcomes;
3. Apply health assessment frameworks and clinical reasoning to inform safe and person-centred practice including solution focused goals of care;
4. Describe comprehensive health assessment using multiple forms of knowledge that is sensitive to diversity and people's health literacy and stage of life; and
5. Explore strategies for effective intra-professional and inter-professional communication using reflective and reflexive practice.
