Legal Systems G (11752.1)

This unit examines law as a system, with particular relevance to Australia. We cover the concept of law itself; the common law tradition; the Australian Constitution; other sources of law; the reception of English law in Australia, including the ramifications of this for First Nations Australians then and now; the practice of law; and critical perspectives on the law.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the historical foundations of the Australian legal system and its sources of law;
2. Locate primary and secondary sources of law and apply them to develop ideas and arguments about legal issues;
3. Analyse and explain how Australian legal institutions work both separately and collaboratively; and
4. Evaluate the Australian legal system in context, including its interaction with Australia's First Nations peoples.
